Master Thesis in Chemistry

Design of experiment in optimization of constituents in
high-entropic oxides for COâ‚‚ hydrogenation to methanol

We are seeking a skilled and motivated young scientist with a finished BSc degree, in the field of Chemistry, Physics, Polymer- or Process Engineering, for pursuing their diploma/master thesis, on a part-time basis (10 to 20h/week), limited to 12 months, to strengthen our team at the headquarters in Linz with immediate entry.

This thesis focuses on the synthesis and optimization of high-entropy oxides (HEOs) as heterogeneous catalysts for COâ‚‚ hydrogenation to methanol. First, a novel shaping and synthesis method for HEO catalysts will be investigated, followed by a structured design of experiments (DoE) approach. An initial coarse DoE will be conducted to screen and evaluate the influence of each constituent, simplifying the vast compositional space. Based on these findings, a refined DoE will then target the most impactful constituents for further optimization. Once an optimal composition is determined, activation protocols will be studied to enhance catalytic performance in COâ‚‚ hydrogenation.

In two coordinated master theses, we investigate how process parameters influence bubble formation and distribution in a model system representative of a real-world process. The first thesis covers the design and construction of a setup that allows in-line observation of the relevant geometries (e.g. stirrers and dispersers) and, in parallel, describes the system by a multiphase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation in OpenFOAM to capture the hydrodynamic distribution of the gas phase within the viscous liquid. The second thesis acquires new experimental data on an existing setup to validate and refine the simulation and optimizes the process and its system components. Both theses run in parallel and share a common experimental basis.

Chain Extension Under Scrutiny: Experimental and Model-Based Analysis of Kinetics for rPET Upgrading

This master thesis investigates the reaction kinetics of liquid-state polycondensation (LSP) as a process for upgrading mechanically recycled PET, combining experimental, modelling, and analytical components. Mechanical recycling degrades molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity (IV), limiting rPET suitability for demanding applications. LSP restores chain length under vacuum at elevated temperatures by driving polycondensation and removing volatile by-products. Beyond kinetic modelling, the thesis explores impedance spectroscopy as an in-situ analytical approach to monitor IV evolution in the PET melt, establishing the correlation between dielectric relaxation parameters and molecular weight progression during polycondensation.

For this position we seek a highly motivated researcher to undertake a comprehensive master's thesis which tries to combine infrared spectroscopy with thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) to better understand the degradation reactions of polymers, particularly polyolefins. By employing these complementary analytical techniques, this work aims to optimize recycling processes for polyolefins and contribute to more sustainable material management. Building on an existing tool for determining reaction kinetics from TGA data. This work will be done on real recycled and virgin material. The thesis seeks to develop a predictive model that can identify optimal processing parameters for unknown polymer samples. This comprehensive approach is expected to enhance the efficiency and quality of recycled polyolefin products and should support the circular economy and reduce environmental impact.

This master thesis investigates the VOC emission characteristics of plastic materials across key industrial sectors food contact, automotive, pharmaceutical packaging and cosmetic packaging with a focus on establishing a systematic comparison of international performance indicators and regulatory standards. By conducting a structured literature review of established norms. This project aims to identify critical knowledge gaps in cross-sector standard harmonization and metric comparability. The comparative analysis of sector-specific parameters, such as Overall Migration Limits, TVOC thresholds, Specific Migration Limits, and Permitted Daily Exposure values, will be supported by a statistical evaluation of published measurement data enabling a benchmark of regulatory stringency, detection capabilities, and analytical methodologies across industries. The findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of how plastic derived VOC hazards are characterized and regulated and will underpin the development of more unified testing frameworks for next-generation sustainable plastic materials.

This master thesis aims at the development of a digital and predictive twin for chemical recycling processes of bio polyesters. Based on an in-house developed and established kinetic model, the goal of this work is to identify deviations between experimental and simulation results to achieve an advanced, comprehensive model describing the melt hydrolysis processes. Building on systematic, widespread experimental data, this project aims to enhance the predictive accuracy of our simulation assisted kinetics model. Moreover, the nuances of the type of bio polyester on the depolymerization outcome in conjunction with depolymerization kinetics will underpin the research of chemical bio polyester recycling.
